The Magnificent Seven (1960)
When a bandit called Calvera (Eli Wallach) raids a poor Mexican village and vows to do that again, villagers decide to look for help outside their borders. A group of them goes outside the village in order to hire 7 gunslingers to defend their precious place. This masterpiece was directed by John Sturges and it’s definitely one of those movies that popularized cowboy dating back in the day. It’s safe to say that the handsome Steve McQueen is responsible for that!
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
Not only that this picture is one of the best western movies ever made, but it’s certainly one of the greatest films ever created, in general. Sergio Leone cemented his place in Hollywood after filming this spectacular movie. It’s an exciting story about a mysterious and dark stranger who, alongside an infamous outlaw, tries to protect a breathtaking widow from a hired assassin. An exhilarating adventure that will amuse both you and your partner.
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)
If you’re a fan of the legendary Humphrey Bogart, you absolutely need to see this western. It about two Americans, Fred Dobbs and Bob Curtin, who are looking for a way to make some decent money in Mexico. After they fail to find some work, an experienced prospector shows them where they can mine for gold in the mountains of Sierra Madre. However, this location is not as quiet and safe as they first thought. John Huston, the director, really outdid himself. This magnificent movie won 3 Oscars!
The Hateful Eight (2015)
One of the best new westerns out there. After creating Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino absolutely had to create another spaghetti western and we’re infinitely grateful for that. This film tells a story of a bounty hunter named John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his prisoner, notorious villain Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh). These two find themselves in the center of a devastating blizzard and they have to seek shelter in an old cabin in Wyoming. John and Daisy need to wait out the storm while sharing the cabin with some rather notorious characters. A tense and extremely fun motion picture.
The Searchers (1956)
John Wayne plays a character named Ethan Edwards, an American Civil War veteran who goes on a dangerous mission to save his niece from the Native American nation Comanches. The John Ford’s movie represents everything a classic western should be. The Searchers won one Golden Globe award, and that’s just one of many reasons why you should see this film with your significant other.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
This is also one of the newly made westerns, at least compared to the ones made fifty, sixty years ago. Coen brothers created a cult movie that revolutionized the modern movie industry. It is a story about a simple and humble hunter called Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) who accidentally stumbles upon a drug deal gone horribly wrong. This film also features one of the best and most iconic performances by the incredibly gifted Javier Bardem. The interesting fact about No Country for Old Men is that this movie doesn’t have a traditional soundtrack, and the silence plays an extremely important role throughout the entire film.
My Darling Clementine (1946)
Another one of John Ford’s masterpieces! My Darling Clementine is a different and a very poetic western. It’s about the famous confrontation between Earps and Clantons at the legendary spot called OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. An unconventional cowboy film you definitely have to watch with your lover. Henry Fonda’s portrayal of Wyatt Earp is one of the best and most romantic performances you’ll ever see in a western movie.
